Sleep Apnea Q & A

What causes sleep apnea?

The cause of sleep apnea varies from person to person. These include: the formation of scar tissue in the throat or sinuses due to an injury. It can also result from being extremely overweight. Other types of sleep apnea can be caused by neurological issues that interfere with the nerve's inability to relay messages that communicate the need to take a breath. For many patients, a combination of factors is responsible. To determine what type of treatment is necessary, the doctor may request a sleep study to evaluate the patient's condition.

How is sleep apnea treated?

Sleep apnea is often treated with the use of a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for constant positive air pressure. A CPAP machine is made up of an air tank, a hose, and a mask that is placed over the patient's face. When the machine is on, there’s a constant flow of air through the mask directed into the patient's nose and mouth while they’re sleeping. The constant flow of air helps prevent snoring and promotes proper breathing patterns. With the person breathing normally, there’s no disruption in sleep patterns, and they’re allowed to achieve a deeper state of sleep for longer periods of time.

When should a person receive medical attention?

A person with sleep apnea may not know they stop breathing unless the situation becomes so severe that they begin to jolt themselves awake. A person with sleep apnea can stop breathing over a hundred times each night. Each time, their oxygen levels begin to drop lower and lower. The longer this continues, the more likely they are to wake up fatigued and to suffer from severe headaches or migraines. They often wake up more tired than before they tried to fall asleep. A person who begins to experience these issues on a regular basis should make an appointment with Kathy Zahedi, DDS & Associates immediately to correct the situation and restore natural sleep patterns.
